about

This started off as a moderate paced swing tune but during the process of arranging it, Geoff Clarkson suggested we try it with a latin beat. A play on the old saw Lucky at cards, unlucky in love. She loves him but is fed up with his gambling ways. The more he wins, the less she likes it! He finally figures out that if he wants her, then he had better start losing!

lyrics

Unlucky at cards, lucky in Love
If only that were true, Heaven above,
I’m waitin’ on you to give me the time,
And say that you’re mine, But
I’m lucky at cards unlucky in love.

Oh the dealer’s hand dealt me a straight,
I’m countin’ my winnings but you show me the gate.
Just the next hand it’s a royal flush,
But I get the bum’s rush.
Cause I’m lucky at cards unlucky in love.
Bridge:
You could be the best thing that’s happened to me,
But as long as I keep winning we’ll have to wait and see
Bridge:
You could be the best thing that’s happened to me,
But as long as I keep winning we’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?

I’ve got to decide to fold or stick.
If I start to lose that might do the trick.
I’m hoping that you have a change of heart,
Maybe make a new start,
And I’ll be unlucky at cards, lucky in love.

Lyrics and Music: Mike Moore. An electric guitar was originally planned for the solo break but as the latin flavor took control, we decided that a nylon string would be better. Our old friend Bruce Merrick has a rare nylon stringed Gibson from the early 1960's that we thought would be perfect for this one and so it was! Geoff Clarkson: Electric guitar, Mike Moore: Nylon string guitar; Mitch Gilbert: Pedal steel guitar, Dan Wolken: Bass, Ken Woodside: Drums, Shorty Barnet: Lead vocal

about

Shorty and the Mustangs Portland, Oregon

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas, western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. The last 10 years the band has created original material with Mr's Wills and Tubb as inspiration.See below and enjoy! ... more
