about

Originally written in a bluegrass style by Mike Moore with a change in key to suit Lara Carlisle's vocal range. The Mustangs adapted the song to our Honky Tonk style. This song was inspired by touring up and down I-5 playing one night stands. It's in part an attempt to answer questions musicians ask themselves when they're tired or the audience is scant.

lyrics

Ridin’ The 5

Now here I am out on the road
Where I’ll lay my head tonight I just don’t know
It’s been a week and you’re miles behind me
With one more town ahead and another show

Chorus:
Headed south in the passing lane
Loaded in in the pouring rain
To an empty house and I sure was feeling low
Changed my shirt and I combed my hair
Suddenly I see you there
The lights go on and I know it’s time to roll

Why do we sing and why do we play?
What brought us to the place we are today?
Is it the attention or just the rush?
It sure ain’t for the cash I know that much.

I think it’s just, a thing we do
And a compulsion that we’ve got to see it through
It’s in the rhythm, it’s in the tone
Cause music has a power all its own

Chorus:

Now here I am out on the road
Where I’ll lay my head tonight I just don’t know

about

Shorty and the Mustangs Portland, Oregon

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas, western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. The last 10 years the band has created original material with Mr's Wills and Tubb as inspiration.See below and enjoy! ... more
