about

We had eight tracks in the can and needed a few more to make a complete album. What does this album need? How about a cowboy waltz. Sure why not. Another song on this album inspired by the northwest. A man in late middle age drinks his days away at a bar in Baker City (the locals still call it just plain old Baker) and starts to remember the things that he forgot. Harry Chapin used to change the words to the chorus in some of his songs as the perspective of his characters changed. You know what they say, steal from the best.

lyrics

Remembering Is Where It Begins
C Em F G
Once I was a young man who lived in the saddle
C Em G
And rode the wide western plains.
C Em F G
Now I am an old man riding this barstool.
G C
And memories are all that remain.

Chorus:
F Em
Where is the west I knew, Place that I loved so true,
F Em
Gone on the wild Chinook winds
F Em
How did it change so fast, nothing good seems to last
D7 F#m G
Forgetting is where it begins.
C Em F G
In the morning we rode with the sun at our backs
C Em G
On up to the great divide.
C Em F G
By noon we’d be up in the pastures near timberline.
G C
And at sunset continue our ride.

Chorus:
Oh the sun it rides low, In the high desert sky
And just like a hawk I can fly.
I’m leaving this barstool and all of these drunk fools,
to kiss all my troubles goodbye

Chorus 2X:
There is the West I knew, Place that I love so true
Here on the wild Chinook Winds
I won’t let it change too fast, Some things are built to last
Remembering is where it begins.

about

Shorty and the Mustangs Portland, Oregon

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas, western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. The last 10 years the band has created original material with Mr's Wills and Tubb as inspiration.See below and enjoy! ... more
