about

The eldest of the ten songs offered here. It just missed being on our last album, Stumptown Swing in 2014 by a few months. Oddly this one wound up being the last recorded. Written by our guitarist, Mike Moore.

A friend of the band arrived at one of our shows in a celebratory mood. He offered to buy us drinks. As he put it, a "virtual cascade of whiskey." Hmm, says Mike there's a song in that phrase! Willie wrote about a Whiskey River, so why not a cascade? As good as his word, our friend made the cascade happen...how could we refuse? By the time the band piled into a car for some after show food at The Original Hot Cake House we commenced bellowing that phrase Cascade of Whiskey, the song was born and lyrics were completed the next day.

The intent was to capture a live version of this one. Unfortunately the pandemic got in the way. Still, we wanted it to have elements of a live sound. Having just worked in Panther Studios on other projects, we decided to place Cascade of Whiskey in the capable hands of Steve Drizos. We invited several friends to come down and sing on the choruses. Most decided to get in the spirit and a bottle of Bulliet whiskey was passed around. The timing of the singalong chorus varies as the song goes along and required Steve to conduct through the window of the sound booth to insure we all got the timing right. The party atmosphere was real and so were the hangovers!

lyrics

Cascade of Whiskey

Chorus:
Cascade of Whiskey, baby I’m sorry
Tell me whats your story
I don’t remember your name
Been on a two week bender
And I don’t where I’ve strayed
Cascade of Whiskey’s washed my memory away

It seems like years since I’ve been straight And we could get along
We knew each other oh so well, and our love was oh so strong
Til I took up the bottle and got myself so tight
I fell so far and forgot your name and I know that just ain’t right

Chorus

How many nights you’ve lain awake and wondered where I am
How many days I’ve spent locked up inside the village can
Til finally the booze runs out and you’re back on my mind
When I’m released the search begins but whiskey’s all I find.
(I search for you?)
Chorus

It’s a wonder I can stand up straight as I walk as I walk through this town
Daring decent sober men to knock me to the ground
When I remember what I did to put me in this place
I’ve managed to forget your name but not your pretty face.

about

Shorty and the Mustangs Portland, Oregon

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas, western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. The last 10 years the band has created original material with Mr's Wills and Tubb as inspiration.See below and enjoy! ... more
